Ford vans we cover
Send the registration so we can confirm the ignition fitted to your specific van.
About Ford ignitions
The Transit range spans many years and specifications, so the ignition fitted to one Transit is not necessarily the same as another. Some Ford vans use a conventional key-turn barrel, while some later versions have keyless or push-button starting.
Because of that, we always start with the registration and a description of what is happening — whether the key goes in, turns, sticks or has snapped — before saying which repair or replacement route makes sense.
Ignition options for Ford vans
- Mechanical ignition barrel repair or replacement — For vans with a key-turn ignition where the barrel is worn, sticking, seized or damaged.
- Electrical ignition switch replacement — The switch behind the barrel can fail on its own — the key turns but the electrical side does not respond properly.
- Electronic ignition (EIS) work — For vans that use an electronic ignition unit rather than a purely mechanical barrel, including some push-button systems.
- Broken key extraction from the ignition — Removing a snapped blade from the ignition without causing further damage, before a new key is made.
Ford Van Ignition Switch Replacement in Eastleigh
Electrical ignition switch replacement is one of the most common jobs we carry out on Ford vans. On a key-turn Ford, the mechanical barrel is the part the key turns in, while the electrical switch behind it sends power to the van's circuits as the key moves through each position.
A barrel fault usually shows up as a key that won't go in, won't turn or sticks. A switch fault is different: the key may turn normally, but the dashboard, accessories or starter don't respond as they should, or power cuts in and out. Battery, wiring and other faults can look similar, so we diagnose the cause on your van before recommending a new switch.
Whether your original key can be kept depends on the van and the fault — we try to keep it wherever possible. If a new key or programming is needed, we will tell you before starting.

Ford ignition questions
Can you replace the ignition switch on my Ford van?
Yes, it is one of our most common Ford jobs. We first check whether the fault is the electrical switch, the barrel or something else, such as the battery or wiring, then explain what is needed.
My Transit key goes in but won't turn — is it the ignition?
A key that physically won't turn, catches or feels stiff can be caused by a worn or damaged key blade or by wear inside the mechanical ignition barrel. It is not normally an electrical switch fault. We check the key and barrel before recommending any work.
Do you work on push-button Ford vans?
Yes, where the van uses an electronic ignition system we can look at it. Push-button vans do not have a mechanical ignition barrel, so the work involved is different.
