Signs of an ignition problem
- The key goes in but will not turn, or only turns part-way
- The ignition barrel feels stiff, sticky or loose
- Visible damage to the ignition, often after attempted theft
- The key turns but the dashboard or starter does not respond
- A key has snapped off inside the ignition
These symptoms need diagnosing — they don't always mean the ignition has to be replaced. A key that physically will not turn, catches or feels stiff can be caused by a worn or damaged key blade or by wear inside the mechanical ignition barrel. An electrical ignition switch fault is different: the key turns, but electrical functions or starting fail. Battery, wiring and other faults can cause similar symptoms, and ignition work will not fix every no-start problem. We check the cause first and explain what is involved before any work starts.
Ignition services we offer
Mechanical ignition barrel repair or replacement
For vans with a key-turn ignition where the barrel is worn, sticking, seized or damaged.
Electrical ignition switch replacement
The switch behind the barrel can fail on its own — the key turns but the electrical side does not respond properly.
Electronic ignition (EIS) work
For vans that use an electronic ignition unit rather than a purely mechanical barrel, including some push-button systems.
Broken key extraction from the ignition
Removing a snapped blade from the ignition without causing further damage, before a new key is made.
Not every van has a mechanical barrel — push-button and card-start vans use electronic systems instead — so the right option depends on your vehicle. Where possible, we try to keep your original key.
Ignition replacement by manufacturer
How it works
Send us the registration, the make, model and year, where the van is, what the ignition is doing, whether the key turns and whether you still have a working key. We confirm what's likely to be involved, then come to the van — at home, your yard or a job site. Ownership is checked before work is carried out.
We cover Eastleigh and nearby areas including Chandler's Ford, Boyatt Wood, Bishopstoke, Fair Oak and more — see all areas covered.

Van ignition questions
Does a key that won't turn always mean the ignition needs replacing?
No. A key that physically won't turn, catches or feels stiff can be caused by a worn or damaged key blade or by wear inside the mechanical ignition barrel. We diagnose the cause before recommending any work.
The key turns but the van won't start — is it the ignition switch?
It can be. An electrical ignition switch fault can stop electrical functions or starting even though the key turns, but battery, wiring and other faults can cause similar symptoms, so we diagnose before recommending replacement.
Can I keep my original key?
It depends on the van and the fault. We try to keep your original key wherever possible and will explain if a new key is needed.
Will ignition work fix my van not starting?
Only if the ignition is the cause. Many no-start problems have nothing to do with the ignition, so we check before carrying out work.
A key has snapped in my ignition — what should I do?
Leave the broken piece where it is and avoid forcing tools into the ignition. Contact us with the registration and location.
Do you come to the van?
Yes. This is a mobile service — we attend your van at home, at your yard or on a job site.
